Happy Monday!!

What would you do if you were barely waking up on Monday morning and on your busy commute to work, someone handed you a yellow balloon and told you to smile. If you'd say "No thanks" you're my kinda person. If you take one and put it in your office then you're my hero. If you take a safety pin and pop it...then there's a special place for you.....IN HELL.
ANYWAY Kenya has been giving away yellow balloons so that you wouldn't have "A case of the Mondays," as said in the movie "Office Space." Kenya is the third country to try this after India and Japan. The project "Monday Morning," is headed by Yazmany Arbodela who plans to bring it to New York....interesting.

'Lookis like a Winner!'

Well well well, after all the rioting and speculating, President Sirleaf of Liberia is predicted to be the winner of Liberian runoff Presidential election. With 86 presincts reporting, she is said to have more than 90% of the vote.

Westernized? ...or NOT

Something has happened in Africa and it is rejected because of ludeness/chauvinism....words we Africans use when trying to show that WE have values. You know...not like y'all westerners (lol). What happened? A store started selling funny shirts with controversial slogans on it....Don't worry, they were pulled off the shelf. One of the shirts displayed an acronym for the word 'Single'
Stay
Intoxicated
Nightly
Get
Laid
Everyday.
I actually thought it was funny. However, human rights groups, feminists, and anti-HIV groups didn't find humor at all.
I don't know. Doesn't South Africa have better things to worry about? Well...I guess sometimes you CAN knock the hustle.

Earthquake in Turkey

This is so sad. Ankara, Turkey is not a stranger to earthquakes. However, no one wants to see this type of damage. The photo above shows rescue workers literally digging survivors out of the rubble. It is 9:20pm GMT October 24th. As of this moment, the death toll is at 279.

Gaddafi Killed

It has been confirmed as of 15 minutes ago that Gaddafi has been killed by protesters in Misrata, Libya. The former Libyan leader was killed by wounds suffered after he was captured. It was reported that his last words were "who are you" as he spoke to the protesters. He died on his way to the hospital. More info to come.

OCCUPY WALLSTREET in Baltimore, MD

The Occupy movement as you've read is worldwide. However, each country-and even city- has their own reasons for protesting. I went to the Occupy Wallstreet movement in Baltimore two weeks ago. Here's what I had to say.

Monday, October 17, 2011

OH....MY....GOD

You know, when the people of Libya revolted against Gaddaffi I really did think they wanted a more tolerant leader. Maybe they do....but why this? You are looking at the back of a black Libyan. Since the revolts, there have been reports of migrant workers from sub-Saharan Africa and their passports being seized;thus barring them from returning to their homes. However THIS is wrong on so many levels. Arabs are already rumored to be racist against darker skinned individuals. Does THIS help that rumor and if it doesn't then why is this being done?
Disgusting.

Occupy Protests Around the World

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

In Rome.....

Normally at Zee Affairs we say "when in Rome." However, this time the practice is not starting in Rome. The Occupy protests which we can claim started with the Arab Spring, and caught on to the United States with "Occupy Wall Street", have also reached Rome, Italy and it looks as violent as ever. Looting, smashing stores, smashing police cars, being dounced with tear gas by police, all in an effort to stop greediness among the rich. We can only hope leaders are listening.
Let's wait and see what happens...

Okay Liberia : Clapping and rolling my eyes LOL

Oh my my my. It looks like Liberia is having a wonderful time. It's been staying out of Human Rights troubles, and 2 of their women have won Nobel Prizes. Yes, President Sirleaf (left) and activist Leymah Gbowee (right...hmm look at Gbowee....African mouth. Anyway (more recently) it's been conducting very very peaceful elections. Just yesterday the election took place between President Sirleaf of Liberia and a former Diplomat who's running mate just happens to be a former athlete (hmmm...sound familiar anyone? fake cough: Republican Party). I don't know why everyone thinks fame leads to political office!!! Oh well. Back to Liberia: President Sirleaf has been making waves since her election, but proud Mama Bear (as described by Huffington Post) is securing her Presidential seat by promoting gender equality among many other things. Let's sit back and sip koolaid. After years of political turmoil this sun has definately come out for Liberia.

In the ring with Granny.

The woman above is Gladys Tsenene. With a name like Gladys, you'd never expect that at 70, she'd be a female boxing promoter. Yup! you read that correctly, Tsenene is a boxing promoter/coach in Eastern Cape, South Africa. From miles away you can hear her shouting "left hook!" and "upper cut!" to the boxers in her gym. She can also be seen scouring local gyms for new talent. Tsenene owns Rainbow Boxing Promotions and represents around 30 18-26year old boxers. I'm sure that, despite her age, her profession keeps her young at heart.
Keep it up Granny!!! Hey we've all known better than to mess with Grandma. This is just another reason why.

The Noble Nobel Winner.

You are looking atDr. Wangari Maathai. The Kenyan Noble Peace Prize winner. She won the Nobel Prize for paying poor women in Kenya small amounts of money to reforest Kenya. It is sad to say that Dr. Maathai passed away after a bout with Ovarian cancer. She was 71. May she rest in peace.

Praying For Justice

Troy Davis, a Georgia man-who was convicted of Murdering a police officer in 1989, was set to be executed at 7pm on 09/21/2011. This will be the fourth execution date for Troy Davis. The evidence against him was not strong enough for him to be executed. This leaves the question as to why he's still on death row. Many societies like ACLU, and NAAC as well as celebrities like Diddy and activist, Russell Simmons have come out on Davis's behalf. Down to the last minute, his lawyers have reached out to the Supreme Court. With 9 justices on the bench, only 5 are needed to stay an execution. It is now 9:11pm EST and the Supreme Court has yet to reach a decision. We are all keeping the faith to free Troy Davis. The picture above says it all.

New York Legalizes same sex marriage.

GO NEW YORK!!

We've heard the statement 'Only in New York' before, but tonight it is far from true. New York Senate has passed the same-sex marriage bill allowing homosexuals equal rights to marriage as heterosexuals. The bill passed in a predominantly conservative Senate with 33 votes supporting and 29 dissenting. Congratualtions to Governor Cuomo who championed this bill and to all who tried for it. More media to come.

Shady Shady Shaaaady!!!

I always knew there was something strange about diplomacy. I mean I love it. After all I'm a student of diplomacy, but there was always something about it that made me look at diplomats out of the corner of my eye. For example lets take today's shady shady shaaady case.
What happened? I'll tell you what happened. Esther Pascaline the wife of a Congolese diplomat to Romania has been arrested for smuggling over 18,000 cigarette packets. OH MY GOSH!!!!! Do you know what this means? It means that there were so many that the police stopped counting. You know how I know? I know, because every article says "over 18,000" which means that when investigators got to number 18,000 they were like "That's it I give up."
Pictures haven't been shown, because of Diplomatic Immunity of course. However, according to BBC Africa Mrs. Bombeto was using Diplomatic Immunity to smuggle Albanian made cigarettes to Romania. It was occuring at a frequency of once a week. She snubbed Romanian intelligence officers who wanted to talk to her, so they.......BROKE HER WINDOW!!! Yes guys they broke her window with a crow bar.
(Sidebar:How do you think they did that? Did they only use the crow bar once? Did they hit the car again and again with her standing behind it screaming "Stop!!! Stop!! I'll confess!!...just wondering.

Okay, so anyway when they broke the window they found over 18,000 cigarette packets.
She was arrested returning from Serbia. What a shame. She obviously doesn't have a legit. job...or maybe her husband doesn't give her "allowance" hmmmm. I'll keep you posted.

Powerful Video. Storms in the midwest

HALT!!!!

Here we go again...Immigrants are being kicked out of Europe. Only this time, they're not exactly illegal. Not like they ever needed to be to be given the boot in Europe. The Schengen Visa that's open to Schengen countries and provides borderless travel throughout the Western European region this includes countries like France and England (...you know just in case you were wondering). Why are immigrants being kicked out? Well in the middle eastern region where protests have been taking place against leaders, or where leaders like Gadaffi are too delusional and people are running away. The problem is that they are running away. In this case, they're running to Europe with their Schengen Visas in tow and are facing opposition from the people and governments of those countries. What will they do? and who will help them? This is really sad...

Where'd you get your jewelry?

Oh wow, how the mighty have FALLEN. The picture above is of the new jewelry Dominique Strauss Kahn will be wearing around his ankle, because he's on house arrest. Ankle bracelets will do two things if you go out of the designated area, in this case his house. It will either beep too loud or will burn the crap out of his leg. I know that when DSK woke up this time last week, he would have never imagined spending many nights in one of America's most notorious prisons, Rikers Island. Rikers Island? I mean really I had to laugh when I heard that news. A rapist in Rikers Island? There's not enough security for that, which is probably why DSK is going home. However, it's not without a lot of money for the American judicial system and a loss of many liberties. DSK has posted $6million dollar bail. Yes $6 million dollar bail!! And that's not it!! Let me go through the full bill.
(Clearing throat and gargling):
Okay so there's the $6million just for him to get out of Rikers
There's also $500,000 dollar fees every month for the security of 24 hour body guards provided to him which he (not American tax payers) will be paying for.
Oh...and an Ankle bracelet.
However, there's also the possible gift that he may have received. They say when you look for something strange you're bound to find it. DSK's victim is an immigrant who lives in housing specifically designated for people with HIV/AIDS. The victim nor her lawyer are willing to confirm wether the woman is HIV positive for fear that her sexual history will overshadow the case. DSK has allegedly refused the test in fear that it will show his intimacy with the victim.
Honestly, this is messy. Wether or not she has the virus or has given him the virus his actions were still wrong and DSK! We ALLLLL know you're guilty!

HE DID WHAT???!!!

Okay, as Africans say, "It has happened it has happened." Earlier tonight in the luxurious Sofitel Hotel in New York the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was arrested for sexual assault. So this is how it happened, a hotel maid was called to his room and when she arrived Mr. Strauss-Kahn was stark naked and tried to "force himself on her." When she was able to escape Mr. Strauss-Kahn made a run for it LEAVING HIS CELL PHONE IN THE HOTEL!!! He was going to run back to France on the soonest Air France plane when the authorities were able to catch up with him JUST BEFORE the plane doors closed.
mm mm mm isn't that exciting? I mean just imagine all the years that he's been doing this and getting away with it? kudos to the maid who stood up to him. However, doesn't it make you wonder? I've seen Mr. Strauss-Kahn before. He's a bit on the heavy side. How did she escape? Did she kick him and run? Did she hit him with a broom or the hotel cell phone? When he ran away did he run in his bathrobe and change at a nearby Brooks Brothers? Was he wearing a navy blue blazer and khakis or was he wearing a suit? You know it would have been much more disgraceful if he was wearing a suit right???
Well we won't know the answers for long, because Mr. Strauss-Kahn is NOT I repeat NOT cooperating with police. This is only the beginning. My eyes are glued to the television and I WILL keep you updated. Why?? Because no sexual abuser deserves secrecy. (finger snap).

Bonjour Monsieur Martelly!!

The man who looks like he's losing his balance is the new Haitian President, Michel Martelly. Martelly is a 50 year old former pop star known as 'Sweet Micky'. Martelly, who promised that he'd build new houses in the Hatian capitol did not exchange words with Preval during the swearing in ceremony which (by the way) took place during a power outage which means if you're in Haiti you probably didn't watch this from home. This election marks a step forward for the Haitian nation which has postponed this election many times. I'm proud of them and of course, I'll be watching to see if Mr. Martelly will follow through on his promises.

Children of the corn.

So corn is something that you and I may eat every now and then. If you're in the East Coast USA like me then you're going to be enjoying corn as summer is almost here and the grocery stores are pretty much forcing corn down your throat...sometimes literally. However, if you're in North Korea, you're probably not reading this and you're probably starving. Why? Because in North Korea, the only thing they've been eating lately is corn...that they grew.
However, now the corn is gone and the only corn available is the corn that's being grown which means there's no corn...or food for that matter. Why? reasons were given like the climate, the amount of corn, but no one said anything about the country's leader being a delusional moron. I mean really, what's the first thing in your International Economics class that you learn? Country's trade, not because they want to, but because they have to. If the only thing your raggedy country has is corn, then you might want to trade other livestock so that you can make money off of your corn and your people can have options(time for a knowledge sigh. say it with me: "ahhhhhh i see"). In this case, North Korea has an absolute advantage when it comes to corn allowing it to export to countries who do not have as much capitol.....anyway before I get too cerebral. We just have to see what happens in the vacuum we all know as North Korea. Currently the World Food Program is deliberating possibly offering food...Not like he'll turn it down...right???

Say it isn't So!!!

In the gulf region of the United States for the past two weeks there have been flood waters that have been devastating towns, washing homes away and in some towns covering the towns with 18 feet of water. The problem now? Flood waters have not stopped. In fact, its coming to New Orleans, Louisiana. We can only hope that this time the waters will hold up. many of us remember that just 6 years ago, New Orleans suffered the most horrendous storm that ever hit it as hurricane Katrina ravaged the city; obliterating the population, destroying stately mansions, and freeing some of the most dangerous prisoners known to man. If you haven't seen Spike Lee's film, "When The Levees Broke," watch it trust me you'll never forget it and you'll understand why I and the rest of the country are praying for New Orleans as they brace for this notorious storm.

If only the Birthers could DIE.

Many of you following American politics know that President Obama has begun his campaign for the 2012 election. Many people have been excited about this, some people for the wrong reasons. Who may those some people be? Well they include none other than Business tycoon Donald Trump. Trump, who I used to like very much before his recent actions, began to berate and bully the President's image by claiming that he was not born in the USA. Many of you know that one of the qualifications for Presidential candidcy is a natural born US citizenship. The President who is infact a natural born US citizen, was born in the American state of Hawaii. On April 27, 2011 the White House released Obama's official birth certificate....hmmm you see the mere fact that it was released upsets me. Don't get me wrong. I'm not upset with the white house, but with the utterly daft and seemingly inadequate individual who is Donald Trump. Since when is it okay to disrespect your President in such a manner and feel that it makes you a man? Due to the color of his skin, the American President has to prove his country of citizenship and his competency.

I guess you CAN'T please everyone!!

For three days straight there have been protests in the street against the current President, Jonathan. Many of us have seen this coming as the newspapers in the states have reported conflicting results about who won. There has also been a vaccuum-a lack of information that has been coming out of Nigeria about the results AND the protests that have been taking place. We can only hope and pray that peace can be restored to Nigeria.

Same old Same old

Well it's looking lke the "same old same old" for Africa's most populous country. Nigeria held it's elections that were free of violence and intimidation (i'm sorry it just feels so good to say that). The results? well we're still waiting. It's been reported that current president, Goodluck Jonathan from the PDP political party is leading in the polls while Nuhu Ribadu seems to be leading in the Muslim north. Results are still coming in, but as we can see there seems to be no "new day" for Nigerian politics as Jonathan is still being counted as the frontrunner.
